The Jigawa State Government has distributed locally made equipment worth over N11 million to the people living in the riverine areas who have offered to assist in clearing of typha grass that blocks water movement in River Hadejia.
Typha grass has been a nightmare for farmers because it blocks movement of water along River Hadejia which results to yearly flooding.
The state governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar who distributed the implements to the locals over the weekend in Hadejia, said the gesture was in consonance to his government’s commitment to improving agriculture.
The governor who was represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Environment in the state House of Assembly, Dayyabu Shehu, said the implements distributed were the types recommended by the locals.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment, Barau Abdullahi Gambasha, said clearing the typha grass would not only open ways for water movement but also send away pests which the grass harbours.
