Aliyu: Nigerian universities produce unemployable graduates

Nigerian universities produce unemployable graduates due to the poor teaching and outdated curriculum, former Governor of Niger State Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Talban Minna said in Abuja yesterday. Contributing to the debate at the 15th Daily Trust Dialogue, Aliyu said proactive measures should be taken to address the matter.

He said, “Our universities as everybody is saying produce unemployed graduates or those that cannot be employed because of the nature of the curriculum and the teaching that is taking place. We must find out what is taking place.” According to him, all stakeholders in the education sector should find out what has happened to our curriculum, saying that they should also proffer a lasting solution to the problem.

He lamented the way and manner the number of out-of-school children has been soaring in the country. He said before 2015 there were 10 million out-of-school children in Nigeria but by the end 2017 the number had increased to 13 million.

Governor Aliyu also said that there was a sharp demarcation between developed countries and Nigeria in terms of education. He said that in the developed world any child that reaches 18 years of age would be regarded as an adult and will become independent of his parents. In Nigeria however, a person will never grow up until his parents are dead, Aliyu said.

Aliyu, who re-emphasized the importance of education, said the country needed a rescue mission. He applauded Daily Trust board members and the management staff for developing the paper to be an international newspaper that is recognized all over the world.

He said that the paper reports investigative and balanced news stories adding that he would quote the paper and referred to it in his research works.
