UN seeks security measures for staff in N/East

The United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR) has called on the federal government to provide adequate security to its staff working in north eastern Nigeria.
The agency said the measure was to ensure its continued efforts in providing more humanitarian support to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the troubled region.
A statement by the agency’s Nigerian office said the UN Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, Mr. Volker Türk made the plea in Maiduguri, Borno State capital during an official visit to Governor Kashim Shettima.
Türk, who said their visit was to have “first-hand” information on the challenges of the IDPs, expressed the agency’s readiness to assist the victims of insurgency.
In his response, Governor Shettima, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Jidda Shuwa called for the assistance of the UN to ease the suffering of the IDPs in the state.
