New appointments at Daily Trust
Five new editors have been appointed in Media Trust
Limited’s newspaper titles while one editor’s acting
appointment has been confirmed, according to a statement
signed by the new Managing Editor, Mr. Theophilus
Abbah. All the appointments were approved by the
company’s Board of Directors.
Malam Nasiru Lawal Abubakar is now the substantive
Editor of Daily Trust. Mr. Theophilus Abbah is the new Managing
Editor. He succeeds Malam Ismaila Umaru Lere, who takes over as the Opinion Pages
Editor. Abbah was editor of the Daily Trust on
Sunday while Lere succeeds Malam Ibrahim Auduson,
who passed away in January.
Malam Lawan Danjuma Adamu is now the Acting Editor,
Daily Trust on Sunday while Miss Stella Iyaji is the
Acting Deputy Editor, Daily Trust on Sunday. Before their
appointments, Adamu was the Deputy Editor, Daily Trust
on Sunday while Iyaji was a senior editor on the News Desk.
Abbah, who holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in
English Language from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
and University of Abuja respectively, started his
journalism career in 1996 at The Punch in Lagos. He rose
through the ranks from Reporter to Assistant Editor. An
award-winning investigative journalist, he joined Daily
Trust in August 2007 as the Head of Investigation Desk.
In 2008, he was appointed Editor of Sunday Trust, a
position he held until his appointment as Managing Editor
in January 2016. Mr. Abbah is an author, journalism
trainer and researcher.
Nasir Abubakar was appointed Acting Editor of Daily
Trust in November, 2014. Before the appointment, he was
Deputy Editor of Daily Trust and had served in various
capacities including as Acting Editor of Weekly Trust and
Deputy News Editor. He studied Mass Communication at
Kaduna Polytechnic and Bayero University, Kano and
started his journalism practice as a stringer with Weekly
Trust in 2000 before joining the company as a full-time
reporter in 2004.
The new Opinion Pages Editor, Ismaila Lere, joined
Media Trust Limited in October 1999 as a
Reporter/Researcher and has played several roles over the
years. He was at various times News Editor, Sports
Editor, Assistant Editor, Deputy Editor and until recently
the Acting Managing Editor from 2013 to January 2016.
A Fellow of the Freedom House, Washington D.C, Lere is
taking over the Opinion Pages with a wealth of
experience in various aspects of Journalism.
The Acting Editor of the Daily Trust on Sunday, Lawan
Adamu, joined the services of Media Trust Limited in
2009 as a correspondent in Kano. In 2011, he was posted
to Zamfara State as state correspondent, where he worked
until he was redeployed back to Kano as Acting Regional
Editor, to edit the Kano Chronicle title and oversee
editorial matters in the North-West. In 2013, Adamu was
appointed Acting Deputy Editor, Sunday Trust, a position
he held until his recent appointment as Acting Editor of
Daily Trust on Sunday.
Adamu graduated with a Second Class (Upper Division)
in Political Science from Usmanu Danfodiyo University,
Sokoto in 2002. Before joining Media Trust Limited, he
had an 8-year sojourn in the Directorate of Army Public
Relations (1996 – 2004). He also had a stint in the National
Review Magazine as a Senior Staff Writer.
Miss Iyaji holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in
English Language from the University of Maiduguri and
University of Abuja respectively. After graduating in 2002
she served in the Imo Broadcasting Corporation under the
NYSC scheme. She joined the services of DBN
Television, Abuja in 2004 where she worked as a
Reporter, News Editor and Producer. She reported the
Police, Judiciary and the Senate. In April 2009, she joined
Media Trust Limited as an Assistant News Editor (States
and Regions), a position she held until her elevation to
the position of Acting Deputy Editor of the Daily Trust on
