Arms deal: 3 ex-army chiefs, others referred to EFCC

The Presidential committee auditing arms purchases since 2007 has forwarded additional names of senior military officers to the EFCC for further investigation.
A security source confided in Daily Trust yesterday that the list contains names of three former Army Chiefs and many serving and retired officers.
It added that the new list had more names on it than the one submitted by the audit committee last month.
The committee had in an interim report indicted senior and retired officers in the Air Force. The former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Adesola Amosu is still in EFCC custody since he was detained few days ago.
Investigations into the culpability of those recommended for further investigation has not been concluded, sources said.
This is because some of the officers invited for questioning have yet appeared before the EFCC to answer allegations levelled against them.
Another reason, the source said, was the refusal of some of the suspects under detention to sign undertakings to return some of the funds allegedly stolen.
A source noted that the audit committee was also working on the backdrop of a recent order by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt Gen Tukur Buratai to all serving military officers to declare their assets.
Already, former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki has been charged for corruption in the now infamous $2.1 billion arms deal scam.
The first set of 17 officers indicted and asked to be further investigated by the EFCC are former Chief of Defence Staff, Retired Air Chief Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh; Former Chief of Air Staff, Retired Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar, and former Chief of Air Staff, Retired Air Marshal Adesola Nunayon Amosu.
