Kano state censorship board in collaboration with Nigeria film institute and media studies Jos, plateau state has trained 450 practitioners in the indigenous Hausa movie industry (Kannywood) in various aspects of film production from script writing to editing.

Executive Director, state censorship board, Muhammad Isma’ila Na’abba Afakallah who disclosed this in a chat with our reporter said the initiative was aimed at equipping the practitioners with modern trends in film making.

He said the training would enable them to capture the cherished cultural values of the Hausa people who they represent in their movie contents.

Afakallah urged the practitioners to always strive to be responsible ambassadors of Hausa people, emphasizing that people would most likely resist any film that goes contrary to their cultural beliefs.

“What I want them to note is that they are not on their own, they are for the people, because they are the real ambassadors of the people; anywhere you see them you’ll see the industry, anywhere you see them you’ll see the Hausa people.

“Their films are produced in Hausa language, all the culture and everything they portray in the films is Hausa culture. If they do something that is not in line with the culture, people would say no to it, they have to portray us according to our own tradition.

“The second thing I want them to learn is that in anything you want to do you have to know first that you are a Muslim, you come from the environment that values culture, we value culture and culture of Hausa people is a very decent culture that’s why they have to be very careful’’ he warned.

While commending Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for expanding the scope of coverage of the state censorship board to the 44 local government areas of the state, Afakallah further disclosed that the government had a plan to establish a film market in Kano to boost sales of home videos.
