Dangote Foundation flags off distribution of 1m bags of rice

The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has launched a nationwide food distribution initiative, beginning in Kano State, to provide over one million 10kg bags of rice to vulnerable Nigerians.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony at the Kano Government House, ADF Trustee Mariya Aliko Dangote reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to tackling food insecurity, particularly during Ramadan and Lent.

“This initiative stems from a deep understanding of the struggles faced by the most vulnerable. While Ramadan and Lent are seasons of reflection and prayer, they are also periods of hardship for many. Our goal is to ease this burden, allowing families to focus on their spiritual observances,” she said.

The distribution will cover all 774 local government areas across Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

ADF said it is working in collaboration with state and local governments, ensuring a safe and efficient process with the support of security officials and community leaders.

Mariya Aliko Dangote said in Kano alone, the initiative will complement ADF’s existing feeding programmes, which have been running since the 1990s.

“Food security is a fundamental pillar of health and well-being, yet many Nigerians struggle daily to meet their basic needs. This initiative is not just about providing relief-it’s about fostering long-term food security,” Mariya said.

She expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government, Hisbah, and community leaders for their collaboration in making the initiative a success.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commended Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his generosity, describing the effort as a lifeline for the less privileged.

To ensure transparent and fair distribution, the state government has established a dedicated committee comprising state ministries, security agencies, civil society organisations, religious leaders and local government authorities.

Governor Yusuf urged all involved to uphold sincerity, fairness and diligence, noting that the ADF team will be on the ground to monitor the process and ensure aid reaches those most in need.
