Osaze Odemwingie sets sights on Nigeria’s Olympic golf glory

Former Super Eagles and LOSC Lille striker Peter Osaze Odemwingie is working behind the scenes to elevate golf to a mainstream sport in Nigeria.

The 43-year-old, who netted 61 English Premier League goals during stints with Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, and Cardiff City, has turned his focus to golf since retiring from football. After completing a professional golf course and earning certification last year, Odemwingie is determined to inspire a new generation of Nigerian golfers.

“My dream is to see the Nigerian flag represented at the elite level of golf,” Odemwingie told BBC Africa. “On tour, I see flags from many countries, but not Nigeria’s. That needs to change. Participation in golf is growing in Nigeria, and I believe it will become competitive, just like football has over the years.”

Acknowledging the limited accessibility of golf in developing nations, Odemwingie hopes his journey will motivate parents to introduce their children to the sport. “I think a lot of people just need an opportunity. Nigerians, when given a chance, excel. Get a club, take a shot, and I’m sure you’ll want to come back,” he said.

Odemwingie also aims to leverage his influence to encourage Nigerian state governments to invest in golf infrastructure. He envisions a future where the sport fosters tourism, scholarships, and international opportunities for Nigerian youth.

“One of my dreams is to see a Nigerian flag on the European or PGA Tour,” he said. “If I can’t play there myself, I want to be part of a team that does. I hope to build a generation of Nigerian golfers who can compete in the Olympics and bring home a medal. It’s a way to sell the project to our government.”

The former Bendel Insurance forward remains steadfast in his mission to transform Nigerian golf.
