The League of Northern Democrats (LND) under the leadership of its Chairman and former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by the recent tragic incidents during food distribution exercises in Ibadan, Abuja, and Anambra, which claimed 45 lives in stampedes.
Dr. Ladan Salihu, spokesperson of the league on Monday in a statement said these heartbreaking events have left the organisation deeply saddened.
“As Nigeria grapples with alarming levels of poverty, hunger, and destitution the generosity of individuals and organizations providing relief to the vulnerable is highly commendable. However, these tragedies highlight the urgent need for safer, more effective methods of delivering assistance.
“We urge all stakeholders – government agencies, non-governmental organizations, religious bodies and community leaders – to adopt measures that prevent such incidents,” Salihu said.
He listed deploying trained personnel to manage crowds during distribution events to ensure order and safety; implementing pre-registration of beneficiaries with designated time slots for collection to minimize overcrowding; establishing multiple distribution centers to reduce congestion and improve accessibility for recipients; and partnering with law enforcement to maintain peace and order during distribution activities.
He also urged the government to develop economic policies that foster self-sufficiency, reducing or even eliminating the need for such handouts. Addressing the root causes of poverty and hunger is essential to prevent future occurrences of such tragic events.
He said, “As we approach the end of the year, we urge all well-meaning individuals and organizations to adopt practices that uphold the dignity and safety of beneficiaries. Let us continue to demonstrate compassion and solidarity, working together to create a society where no one is left behind.”
