Sokoto distributes fertilizer, inputs to dry season farmers

The Sokoto State Government has distributed 69 trucks of fertilizers and other inputs to dry season farmers for free.

Flagging off the distribution exercise in Wamakko Local Government Area of the state on Monday, Governor Ahmed Aliyu said farmers from each of the 23 local government areas would receive three trucks of fertilizers.

“The idea is to ensure improved agricultural output in the state during the 2024 dry seasons, and by implication create job opportunities to our teeming youths especially at the grassroot,” he said.

The governor recalled that during the raining season, 45,366 bags of NPK, 24,264 bags of urea, 20,664 liters of Agro chemicals and 20,000kg each of rice, sorghum and millet seeds were distributed to farmers across the state at no cost.

Aliyu assured that his government would continue to provide all necessary support to the teeming farmers through the provision of farm inputs such as agricultural machines, fertilizer, agro chemicals, seeds and other support services.

“We would insha Allah strengthen our farmers to go into cash crops production particularly, cotton and Groundnut,” he pledged.

On the move to enhance irrigation activities in the state, the governor noted that Kware Irrigation Scheme, covering 450 hectares was completed and would soon be allocated to farmers.

He added that work in Wurno Irrigation Scheme had commenced in earnest, while contract for the rehabilitation of the famous Lugu Dam had been awarded and work would soon commence.

He called on serving and retired civil servants, politicians, businessmen and women, as well as the entire people of the state to take advantage of these opportunities and participate in one form of agricultural activity or the other in order to be self-reliant and enhance economic growth in the state.

Also speaking, the leader of the All Progressives Congress in the state and Senator representing Sokoto North, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, commended the governor for his resolve to boost agricultural activities through distribution of free inputs to farmers.
