The Federal Government is considering penalty for road users damaging highways.
The Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Goronyo disclosed this on Tuesday while inspecting the ongoing renovation of the 80 kilometers Sokoto-Illela-Niger Republic border road being executed by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
“The government spends a huge amount of money on road rehabilitation and maintenance every year but they are being damaged by heavy trucks.
“We will not allow some unscrupulous vehicles owners to be destroying our roads deliberately,” he said.
He also warned vehicles owners and persons causing road obstructions to desist or face the wrath of the law.
The minister noted that they would soon launch the “Operation Safeguard Our Roads Initiative” to monitor Nigerian roads.
He solicited the support of all stakeholders towards achieving the desired objectives.
Earlier, Goronyo launched solar-powered street light projects also executed by FERMA at Sultan Abubakar International Airport and nearby roads.
He described the projects as life-saving aimed at enhancing security surveillance for public safety, stressing that before the project places were regarded as danger zones especially in the night.
In his speech, the Managing Director of FERMA, Dr Emeka Agbasi, said the projects were awarded to enhance the condition of the roads for public use which were part of FERMA’s mandates.
According to him, 58 of the 80 kilometers of the road were already repaired.
Giving the scope of the work, he said it involved scarification on the carriage way, cutting of potholes, crushed stone base course on carriage way and crushed stone based course in potholes.
Others were prime coats on the carriage way, prime coats in potholes, asphalt on carriage ways and asphalt in potholes.
Agbasi commended the minister on his determination to actualize President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda of transformations in the country.
