Court adjourns corruption case against Ganduje, wife; urges lawyers to avoid ‘street language’

Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of the Kano State High Court has scheduled January 13, 2025, to address all pending preliminary objections in the bribery and corruption case against former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his wife Prof. Hafsat Ganduje, and six others.

During Wednesday’s hearing, the judge advised counsel to maintain professionalism by refraining from using “street language” in their arguments in both civil and criminal cases.

M.N. Duru (SAN), counsel for the 3rd defendant, Abubakar Bawuro, objected to a remark by the prosecution counsel, Adeola Adedipe (SAN), who suggested that the defence’s objections were a deliberate tactic to delay the case, which he described as criminal in nature.

Duru urged Adedipe to exercise caution in his language as a “minister in the temple of justice.”

Sanusi Musa (SAN), representing the 5th defendant, Jibrilla Muhammad, supported Duru’s position.

In response, Justice Aliyu reminded all legal representatives of their critical responsibility to uphold the principles of justice at all times.

The prosecution counsel apologised for his remarks and agreed to a brief adjournment.

He also applied to withdraw one of his counter-affidavits dated October 18, 2024.

The case, brought by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), involves charges against Ganduje, his wife, their son Umar Abdullahi Ganduje (Abba), and others, including Abubakar Bawuro, Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Limited, Safari Textiles Limited, and Lasage General Enterprises Limited.

The allegations include corruption, bribery, and the misappropriation and diversion of billions of naira in public funds.
