The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said it receives more than two million complaints annually regarding human rights abuses across Nigeria.
This was disclosed by NHRC Executive Secretary, Prof. Anthony Ojukwu, during a National Legislative Forum on Human Rights held in Abuja as part of this year’s International Human Rights Week.
The event was organised by the NHRC in collaboration with the European Union (EU), the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme.
“We receive over two million complaints a year and that is really mind-boggling,” Ojukwu said.

Represented by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonbvere, he noted that Nigeria’s constitutional and international commitments form a strong framework for protecting citizens’ rights but require effective implementation.
Senator Adeniyi Adegbomire, SAN, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters emphasised that democracy is inseparable from human rights.
He urged that suggestions from the forum be forwarded to the National Assembly for appropriate action.
