‘Operation Whirlwind’, a task force of the Nigerian Customs Service put together to combat activities of smugglers in Adamawa State, has seized goods worth over N81.5 million.

Comptroller H. K. Ejhunu, National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, said the seized items include 11,124 jerry cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 53 drums of 200 litres capacity each filled with PMS, and 21,000 litres of PMS conveyed in two fuel tankers.

Five vehicles and two motorcycles were also intercepted by the operatives after arresting a suspect in connection with smuggling activities who is currently facing prosecution.

Ejhunu said the team’s efforts have led to a stable and sufficient supply of petroleum products in Adamawa State.

He said the seized PMS would be auctioned to the general public due to its inflammable nature, as provided in the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, adding that the proceeds would be remitted into the federation account.

The comptroller emphasised that the Nigeria Customs Service is committed to facilitating legitimate trade while combating illicit oil marketers and economic saboteurs.

He encouraged genuine oil marketers to continue their business without fear of harassment or seizure of their products.
