Ohimini opens Benue Governor’s Cup with victory over Gwer-West

Ohimini Local Government opened their campaign in the ongoing Benue Governor’s Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over their counterparts from Gwer-West at the famous JS Tarka Stadium Gboko.

himini took the lead in the 43rd minute and added the second in the 77th minute before Gwer-West reduced the deficit four minutes before regulation time.

All the 23 Local Government Areas in the state are taking part in the competition.

The LGAs have been divided into four groups. Group A comprises Okpokwu, Oju, Ado, Agatu, Ohimini and Gwer-West with Gboko as the venue. Makurdi, Ukum, Gboko, Ogbadibo, Kwande and Vandeikya are in Group B with Otukpo as the centre.

Katsina-Ala, will trade tackles with Konshisha, Ushongo, Gwer-East, Otukpo and Obi in Group C at Vandeikya while Buruku, Apa, Guma, Tarka and Logo fall into Group D with Oju as the venue.

It will be recalled that the Benue State Football Association (BSFA) under the leadership of Barrister Paul Edeh resuscitated the grassroots competition after an 8-year hiatus.

While announcing the return of the grassroots tournament, Edeh expressed pride in the return of the long-anticipated tournament.

He said: “Today we are proud to announce the return of the much-anticipated Governor’s Cup, an event that has been absent from our state for over eight years.”

Before the official kick-off on Saturday, the Commissioner of Youths, Sports and Creativity, Hon. Terkimbi Kyange, presented two sets of jerseys and 10 balls to each of the 23 LGAs.

The tournament will culminate with a Super 8 playoff where a champion would emerge.

The eventual winner would take home a giant trophy and a whopping N10 million.
