The event which was held on November 23 at the Bukavu Barracks Kano featured ten bouts, saw young and promising boxers in the north-west competing in weight categories ranging from 46-48kg, 54kg, 60kg, and 64-66kg.

Speaking on the effort to resuscitate boxing in the region, former Chairman of Kano Sports Commission, Ibrahim Galadima, commended the Army for providing facilities for the event.

He noted that with the National Sports Festival in January, the competition would help young athletes prepare for the games in Abeokuta.

The Commander of the 3rd Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General M.A. Tukur, spoke of the army’s commitment to supporting boxing.

He described boxing as a sport that builds courage and resilience, qualities that align with the values instilled in army cadets.

“Boxing is a sport for the brave,” Tukur said, emphasizing its role in fostering discipline and mental toughness.

A representative of Yucateco Promotions, Omoleye Yakubu Imadu, highlighted the importance of creating more opportunities for aspiring athletes, citing last year’s award to Sabo Muhammed, the only northern boxer to be unearthed.

“This year, we see many more young fighters with potential. With proper support, they can go far,” the promoter said.
