The Maikaya Development Foundation (MDF), in collaboration with the Nasarawa State Government, has enrolled no fewer than 750 vulnerable individuals, including persons living with disabilities (PLWDs), women and children, into the Nasarawa State Health Insurance Agency (NSHIA).
The initiative spans the 13 local government areas of the state and aims to address the healthcare needs of underserved populations.
Chairman/CEO of MDF, Muhammed Musa-Maikaya, disclosed this during the programme’s flag-off in Lafia, the state capital, on Friday.
He described the initiative as a groundbreaking effort to provide access to healthcare for marginalised communities, who often face challenges affording medical services due to economic constraints.

“This is a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state, designed to cater to the health and well-being of underprivileged communities,” Musa-Maikaya said.
He explained that enrolees were selected randomly from across all local government areas in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure fair distribution and broad participation.
Dismissing allegations of political undertones, Musa-Maikaya stated, “The enrolment process is entirely humanitarian and has no connection to any political ambition.”
At the event, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, represented by Commissioner for Health, Gaza Gwamna, commended the initiative, describing it as a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage in the state. He noted that a healthy population is crucial for economic growth, particularly in agriculture and industrialization.
Executive Secretary of Nasarawa State Health Insurance Agency (NSHIA), Yahaya Ubam, also encouraged residents to register for the state health insurance scheme, which he described as accessible, affordable and efficient.
