FG, Varsities urged to introduce global citizenship, Blue economy into educational curriculum

A Professor of General Breast and Endocrine Surgery, King-David Terna Yawe, has called on the federal government and university system to introduce global citizenship, Marine Blue Economy and Green Economy into the educational curriculum.

Prof Yawe said the curriculum they will be introducing should include a very big portion of the Blue and Green Economy that can be used in an industry, and governments, and international organizations to invest in.

The Don who made the call while delivering the 5th Combined Convocation lecture of Bingham University, Karu, on Friday in Abuja, with the theme, “Empowering Graduates As Global Citizens for a Sustainable Future,” also recommended that the varsities promote research activities in Nigeria’s Maritime and Blue Economy.

He said: “You can also be encouraged to participate in the Green Economy, which has to do with the benefits of sustainability, low carbon emissions, resource efficiency, social inclusion, biodiversity, ecosystem, and what we also call secular economy.

“It’s unthinkable that a graduate of any of our universities should be looking for work, they should be creating jobs. They could start small, but they will expand.”

He said: “In an increasingly interconnected world, the role of global citizens is crucial. Graduates with a global mindset, critical thinking skills, and a commitment to social justice can address pressing global challenges and foster a sustainable future.”

The speaker calls for more innovative and collaborative approaches to education and development to ensure students are equipped to thrive in this changing world.

“By getting involved in these partnerships, students can gain valuable skills and experiences that prepare them for global citizenship and real-world challenges. These experiences are essential for empowering graduates and preparing them to be problem-solvers and leaders in the future,” he said.

While noting that encouraging graduates to become leaders involves empowering them with the necessary skills and confidence to take initiative, inspire others, and create meaningful impact, he said by assuming leadership roles, graduates can contribute to the betterment of their communities and advocate for global citizenship values.

Prof Yawe recommended that policy makers and universities should promote interdisciplinary approaches, saying it is crucial for holistic education and to also foster a culture of lifelong learning, which empowers graduates.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the varsity, Prof who welcomed guests said the lecture was to challenge students and graduands that acquiring a degree is just the first step in the journey.

Prof Ayuba noted that what graduands do with the degree is entirely a different ball game, while admonishing them to take the lecture seriously as it would inspire, prepare them for the future with insights from experiences of a distinguished individual.
