Lusaka hosts 8th African women’s conference

The African Women Conference (AWC) has been charged to come up with recommendations that can improve African women’s participation in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, made the call at the 8th African Women Conference held from 6 to 8 November 2024 in Lusaka, Zambia, adding that by leveraging AfCFTA, African women could unlock new economic opportunities, enhance their participation in trade, and contribute to the continent’s growth and development.

While expressing excitement to be a part of the collective effort to empower and uplift women across the continent, the minister said 2025 marks a significant milestone in the journey towards advocating for better deals for women across the globe.

Dr Jumai Ahmadu, Co-convener of the conference, on her part, said the Conference is committed to implementing SDG 17, which is to revitalize global partnerships for sustainable development, saying the Conference provides a platform through which African women working for the growth of the continent are brought together to achieve this.

 

She called on women leaders and other critical stakeholders to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence.
