Intelligence gathering: Immigration to boost operations accross LGAs

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has vowed to improve operations at its divisional offices in all 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country in order to strengthen intelligence gathering and proactive engagement with border communities.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of a three-day Nigeria Immigration Service Comptroller General Annual Conference held in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

The communique which was signed by Comptroller-General of the Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, also pointed out that the service shall sustain the deployment of relevant cutting-edge technology to improve border security.

“Recognizing the complexities of contemporary challenges of border governance and migration management, and securing Nigeria’s territorial 4,047km borders with Benin (773km), Cameroun (1690km), Chad (87Km), Niger (1497) and the Gulf of Guinea, (853km), the Nigeria Immigration Service, saddled with the constitutional mandate of border security governance the NIS shall continue to collaborate and synergize with relevant agencies and stakeholders.

“We shall sustain the deployment of relevant cutting-edge technology to improve border security, migration management through automated cisa issuance and passport application processes, and  Shall draw up a strategic plan that aligns with the the federal government’s initiatives on Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) and tourism that will attract improved funding.

“Also, the NIS shall restructure and improve operations at the Divisional Immigration Offices, in all 774 LGAs to strengthen intelligence gathering and proactive engagement with border communities in Nigeria, and will as well engage in further process re-engineering, and develop a strategic plan to promote professionalism, patriotism, discipline and seamless service delivery.

“Furthermore, the NIS will continue to sustain the inbuilt motivation of staff as a priority objective, including training and capacity building for officers and men to enhance knowledge acquisition and professionalism, and will prioritize the need to have a robust health insurance policy and pension package for retired officers,” the communique partly read.

During the conference, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, noted that if a nation does not have protective borders, it cannot enhance internal security.

He said there should be close inter-agency relationship, particularly between the customs and immigration.

The Minister stressed that in order to effectively monitor movement of people in and out of the country, visas will henceforth the processed Nigeria and not from other countries.

The conference had 448 participants and delegates (Male-237 and Female-211), from diverse backgrounds and sectors.
