*Can you introduce yourself to our readers, and give a little insight about yourself?•

My name is My name is Johanah Napoleon, and I go by Ms Jay. I’m proud of both my first and family names; ‘Napoleon’ holds significance in Haiti, the Caribbean, and even France. Haiti itself is a country of rich culture, known as the first Black republic and celebrated for its vibrant cuisine, music, and beautiful people. I feel honored to carry my heritage with me wherever I go.

Asides from holding a BSC in nursing and a registered Nurse, you are also a certified healthcare and wellness professional. What keeps you going? What motivates you?

From a young age, I developed a deep passion for beauty and wellness, always dreaming of becoming an aesthetician or owning my own beauty salon. However, my father often reminded me that a career in cosmetology or as an esthetician wasn’t a ‘real’ profession. Now, as I stand on my own, I’ve realized that it’s never too late to pursue my dreams. With determination and dedication, I’ve invested in Jay Luxury Spa and Wellness, creating a space where my vision for beauty, wellness, and self-care can truly come to life.

Your career path involves a lot of close contact with client and customers. Given the health challenges from flu, RSV, COVID and the likes how do you make sure your clients and staff are protected?

To protect clients and staff amid health challenges like flu, RSV, and COVID, I implement stringent sanitation protocols using hospital-grade disinfectants in treatment and common areas, informed by my background in nursing and aesthetics. Health screenings, such as temperature checks and symptom questionnaires, are conducted for both clients and staff to prevent potential exposure.

Additionally, I advocate for up-to-date vaccinations among my team to further reduce risks, fostering a safe and reassuring environment for everyone at Jay Luxury Spa and Wellness.

How do you cope with running a spa and wellness business given the challenging and unique nature of the business environment?

I navigate the challenges of running a spa and wellness business by combining strategic planning, adaptability, and a strong client-centered approach. My background in nursing helps me understand client health needs deeply, while my entrepreneurial experience guides me in making agile decisions, especially in a constantly evolving market. By staying updated on industry trends and continuously refining services, I aim to meet clients’ expectations with high standards of care and innovation.

Additionally, I focus on building a resilient, passionate team and cultivating a welcoming environment that prioritizes wellness, both for clients and staff.

Looking back now with hindsight, is there anything you would want to change about your life trajectory?

Looking back, the main thing I’d consider changing is being too nice, as it’s led to people taking advantage of my kindness. While I’m proud of my journey and the strength I’ve gained, I sometimes wish I’d set stronger boundaries earlier. This might have helped me protect my energy and resources while staying focused on my goals. However, each experience, even the challenging ones, has shaped me into the resilient entrepreneur and person I am today, so I embrace my path with gratitude and use these lessons to keep growing.

When you started out, did you envision becoming successful in your niche market?

When I started out, I had a strong drive and vision, but I didn’t fully anticipate the level of success I would achieve. I knew I wanted to make a meaningful impact in the beauty and wellness industry, fueled by my passion for helping people feel confident and healthy.
My goal was to create a luxurious, holistic experience that set Jay Luxury Spa and Wellness apart. Over time, as my business grew and I saw the positive impact on my clients’ lives, my confidence and vision expanded. While success was always a hope, I’m grateful and humbled by how far I’ve come and excited for what’s next.

Tell us, how do you relax away from work when you are not running the business. What are your hobbies, what do you do for rest and relaxation?

When I take a break from running the business, I truly enjoy the chance to unwind and recharge. Music is my go-to, especially when I can play a favorite track, pour a glass of red wine, and let myself relax. It’s a simple ritual that allows me to appreciate the moment, connect with myself, and shake off any stress from the day.

Watching Nollywood movies is another hobby I love. I find their storytelling unique and captivating, often immersing me in vibrant cultures and rich narratives. The energy and authenticity in these films resonate with me, giving me a different perspective and sense of comfort. It’s a fun escape, and I appreciate the way it combines relaxation with a touch of familiarity and inspiration.

This balance of music, wine, and film helps me refuel, staying ready for whatever comes next in both life and business.

Do you read books, novels? Which author are you reading at the moment?

Currently, I’m reading works by Terri Wojak, a top-selling author and expert in the medspa and aesthetics field. Her insights into advanced skincare techniques and the business side of aesthetics have been incredibly valuable as I grow Jay Luxury Spa and Wellness. Books like hers offer both practical strategies and inspiration, helping me refine my approach and stay informed on best practices in the industry.

Yes, I enjoy reading, especially books that inspire personal growth, entrepreneurship, and sometimes novels for a good escape. Right now, I’m focused on books that align with my journey in business and self-development. While I’m currently immersed in writing my own book on entrepreneurship, I enjoy reading works by authors who delve into success stories, resilience, and the mindset needed for growth.

As a Haitian raised and living in New York, what’s that one thing that sets New Yorkers apart?

As a Haitian raised in New York, I’d say the one thing that truly sets New Yorkers apart is their resilience and tenacity. New Yorkers are constantly on the move, adapting to the city’s fast-paced, ever-changing environment, and this fosters a strong work ethic and drive to succeed. No matter the challenges, people here push forward with a sense of pride and grit that’s unmistakable. It’s an attitude I carry with me, and it’s deeply influenced my approach to life and business. Some Nigerian friends I have always tell me that the fast pace and high cost of living in New York reminds them of Lagos, Nigeria.

When was your spa and wellness company founded? When and Why did you decide to become your own boss instead of working for others?

I founded Jay Luxury Spa and Wellness in February 2019. The decision to become my own boss stemmed from my desire for creative freedom and the ability to bring my vision for beauty and wellness to life. I wanted to create a space that not only offered high-quality services but also emphasized the importance of holistic well-being. Working for others often felt limiting, and I knew that by taking the entrepreneurial route, I could better serve clients, implement my ideas, and foster an environment that aligned with my values and passion for helping others.

What are your long term goals for your business? Where do you see yourself in the next 7 years?

7 years is a lot to think about but let’s say In the next three years, I see myself embracing a fulfilling personal and professional journey. I want to get re-married and create new memories with my husband, traveling the world together and experiencing cultures, beauty, and inspiration that can shape both our lives and my business vision.

Professionally, my dream is to establish a top-tier cosmetic surgery and medspa that embodies elegance, innovation, and glamour. I want to create a space where clients experience not only luxury but also cutting-edge treatments and a welcoming environment that makes them feel valued and cared for. My goal is for this medspa to set a new standard in beauty and wellness, offering services that blend the latest medical aesthetics with a personalized, transformative experience.

What piece of advice have you gotten that still motivates you till date?

One piece of advice that continues to motivate me is, “Never underestimate the power of persistence.” This resonates deeply with me because it emphasizes the importance of resilience in the face of challenges. Throughout my journey, I’ve faced obstacles and setbacks, but remembering that persistence can lead to success has encouraged me to keep pushing forward. It reminds me that every step, no matter how small, contributes to my growth and the realization of my dreams, whether in business or personal life.

I can tell you love listening to music. Which artist inspires you? Which two songs can always be found on your playlist?

My favorite Nigerian artists include Burna Boy, whose music resonates with me on many levels. I’m also a big fan of Davido; his energy and catchy melodies always lift my spirits and keep me motivated.

Additionally, I can’t forget about Wizkid and his latest songs. His ability to blend Afrobeats with various genres is impressive, and his music has a unique vibe that captivates listeners.

I also appreciate Caribbean music, particularly the artist Eric Virgal, whose style brings a rich cultural vibe. I enjoy genres like zouk and kizomba, as they embody the spirit of the Caribbean and provide a joyful atmosphere for dancing and celebration. These artists and genres not only represent the vibrant music scene in Nigeria and the Caribbean but also connect with audiences worldwide, including myself.

Which Haitian artiste (male/female) is your favorite?

My favorite Haitian artists are Tabou Combo and Rodrigue Milien. Tabou Combo is legendary for their vibrant blend of kompa and other genres, creating music that captures the spirit of Haiti. Rodrigue Milien’s work is also incredibly inspiring, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Haitian music. Both artists have made significant contributions to the music scene, and their songs resonate deeply with me, reflecting the beauty and complexity of Haitian culture.

What puts you off about people?

What really puts me off about people is negativity, lies, and backstabbing. When individuals engage in gossip or speak poorly about others, it not only creates a toxic atmosphere but also undermines trust and collaboration. I believe that honesty and transparency are crucial in any relationship, whether personal or professional. Experiencing deceit or betrayal from someone I trusted can be particularly disheartening, as it disrupts the foundation of respect and support I seek in my interactions.

I value positivity and encouragement, and I strive to surround myself with people who share those principles. I find that when you foster a supportive environment, it not only enhances personal well-being but also promotes creativity and productivity. Ultimately, I prefer to invest my energy in relationships that are built on mutual respect and understanding, as that creates a more fulfilling and harmonious life.

What quality about Haitians makes you proud to be Haitian?

What makes me proud to be Haitian is our remarkable history and cultural heritage as the first black republic. This achievement is a powerful symbol of resilience, independence, and the fight against colonialism, showcasing our ancestors’ courage in striving for freedom. Our rich culture is evident in every aspect of life in Haiti, from the vibrant art and colorful festivals to the diverse and delicious cuisine that reflects a fusion of flavors and traditions.

Haitian music, particularly genres like kompa and rara, embodies the spirit and energy of our people, telling stories that resonate with both joy and struggle. The traditions we uphold, whether in dance, storytelling, or family gatherings, are steeped in history and serve as a connection to our African roots, honoring those who came before us.

Being part of such a dynamic community, where family and solidarity are paramount, instills a profound sense of belonging. I take pride in sharing our stories, showcasing our culture, and contributing to the narrative that celebrates Haiti’s beauty and strength on a global scale.

When was the last time you went on vacation? Which country is on your bucket list?

The last time I went on vacation was a three-week adventure that took me to South Africa, Italy, and Santorini, Greece. Each destination offered a unique experience that left a lasting impression. In South Africa, I marveled at the stunning landscapes, from the iconic Table Mountain to the vibrant wildlife in Kruger National Park. The rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality made the trip truly special.

In Italy, I indulged in the exquisite cuisine, explored historical landmarks, and reveled in the art and architecture that define cities like Rome and Florence. The beauty of the Italian countryside, especially in regions like Tuscany, was a highlight, as I enjoyed wine tastings and picturesque views.

Santorini was a dream come true, with its breathtaking sunsets and whitewashed buildings overlooking the Aegean Sea. Relaxing by the beach and experiencing the local Greek culture was the perfect way to unwind.

While I’ve been busy with work since returning, I have Japan on my bucket list. The allure of its rich history, from ancient temples to modern technology, fascinates me. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of enjoying authentic Japanese cuisine, exploring the cherry blossoms in spring, and immersing myself in the unique blend of tradition and innovation that defines the country. I can’t wait for the opportunity to experience Japan’s vibrant culture and breathtaking scenery firsthand.
