Suspended LG chair apologises to Lagos assembly

The suspended chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Jelili Sulaimon, has formally apologised to the Lagos State House of Assembly for his actions that led to his suspension.

Sulaimon’s suspension on October 7 followed allegations of non-compliance and defiance toward the legislative body. Initially, he contested the suspension through a statement by his lawyer, Dr Abdul Mahmud, calling it “illegal and unconstitutional” and arguing that it violated the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on local government autonomy.

However, in a shift of stance, Sulaimon issued a ‘Letter of Apology’ addressed to the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, which was read on the Assembly’s floor on Tuesday.

In the letter, Sulaimon admitted his actions may have been perceived as disrespectful and apologised for any misunderstanding.

“Upon reflection, I realised that my conduct and certain decisions might have been seen as disrespectful. This was never my intention, and I regret any discomfort caused to you and the House,” he stated.

Sulaimon informed the assembly that he had also withdrawn the lawsuit filed against the legislative body in the Federal High Court, Abuja, signalling his intention to mend relations.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Eromosele Ebhomele, confirmed that while the apology letter had been received, the Assembly was yet to deliberate on it.
