Unilorin, Unijos non-teaching staff join nationwide strike

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in the universities, University of Ilorin chapter, on Tuesday, joined the nationwide strike called by the national body.

Federal universities across the country have shut down in compliance with the indefinite strike called by JAC.

The JAC comprises the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

Speaking to newsmen at the entrance of the school, Mr Suberu Ibrahim, the NASU chairman of the Unilorin Branch, said the strike action would be total and indefinite.

According to him, the action is a result of the non-payment of the four months withheld salaries of its members.

The JAC of the NASU and SSANU of the University of Jos has also joined the indefinite nationwide strike declared by the national body of the unions

Declaring the commencement of the strike action at the SSANU branch, University of Jos, the leadership of the group asked all members to remain at home until further notice. The leaders of the groups gave reasons for their participation in the strike.

Anthony Joro, SSANU Chairman, University of Jos, said: “Since President Tinubu’s approval of our unpaid salaries, the sister unions in the university like ASUU for example, have been paid four months of their salaries. We have to embark on the strike for the government to know that we have not been paid.”
