Ighogbadu Primary School wins Zenith Bank Delta Headmasters’ Cup

Ighogbadu Primary School from Warri South Local Government Area has emerged as the champions of the 3rd edition of the Zenith Bank Delta State Headmasters’ Cup.

In the final played over the weekend at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba, Delta State, Ighogbadu Primary School defeated Johannah Model School, Udu 1-0 to take home the prestigious trophy.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu, praised the tournament, noting that it reflects Delta State’s commitment to sports development.

“Delta has always been a leading state in sports. When we host, we win; and if we don’t host, we still win,” Emu stated as he lauded Zenith Bank for sponsoring the competition and helping to discover young players.

In the third place match, Ani-nshi Primary School, Ogwashi-Ukwue edged out Ometan Primary School, Okpe in a penalty shoot-out.

Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Kingsley Asigbogu, revealed that 756 schools took part in the preliminaries, aligning with the state’s goal of promoting football among primary school children.

“This championship strengthens our policies and encourages a new generation of players,” said Asigbogu.

Zenith Bank’s representative, Ifeanyi Atama, expressed satisfaction with the event’s success, promising to consider introducing a female category in future editions.

“The enthusiasm and talent displayed have been remarkable, and we’re committed to further enhancing youth sports in Delta,” Atama stated.

The victorious school received N2m cash prize plus a school bus, second place and third place finishers took home N1.5m and N1m respectively while the fourth placed team got N500,000 cash prize.

The event climaxed with the presentation of medals and individual awards to outstanding players.
