Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has paid tribute to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), on his 90th birthday.
Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, commended the elder statesman, describing him as the chief promoter of national unity.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, he highlighted the former military leader’s significant contributions to institutionalising Nigeria’s peace process.
“I celebrate our father and distinguished elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon, on his 90th birthday. As Head of State from August 1, 1966, to July 1975, he worked tirelessly to ensure the unity of our nation.

“In the past five decades, he has played a leading role in promoting peace and unity in the country, earning him the title of chief promoter of national unity.
“As we mark his 90th birthday, I pray that God grants him good health and strength so that we can continue to benefit from his wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and experience. Happy birthday to our brand new nonagenarian,” he said.
