Kebbi college shut down indefinitely over students’ protest

Following the protest that erupted at the College of Health Sciences, Jega on Thursday, the Kebbi State Government has ordered the closure of the school till further notice.

The government also constituted a nine-man panel of enquiry headed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Higher Education, Hussaini Abdullahi Suru.

Suru told journalists journalists on Friday that the the panel’s terms of reference was to identify the cause of the students’ protest, the gang leaders, the lecturers behind it, external forces and estimate the level of damage caused to the institution’s property.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, said the closure of the college became imperative in view of the fact that if the demonstration was allowed to continue, it might escalate to an uncontrollable level.

He said, “Their main target is the provost. they burnt his house and completely vandalised his car. The Divisional Police Office (DPO) of the area has to take the provost to police station to rescue his life”.

The students on Thursday went on protest over claim of non-accreditation of some of their courses and alleged extortion by the institution’s management.

The panel is given two weeks to submit its findings and recommendations.

The chairman of the panel assured that the assignment would be concluded within the time frame and justice served.
