The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has attributed the persistent grid collapse to the deplorable conditions of the country’s national grid infrastructures.
The minister stated this during the unveiling of the office of an electricity prepaid metre-producing firm, Hexing LIVOLTEK, in Lagos, emphasising the need for private investment to forestall breakdown in the existing infrastructure.

The unveiling event provided guests with an exclusive look at Hexing LIVOLTEK’s state-of-the-art products, designed to address Nigeria’s energy challenges and foster long-term energy resilience.

Adelabu who was at the unveiling said, “What we do now is to make sure that we manage it. And in the last four months, we have not heard of any grid collapse, except two days ago, while we had a partial
collapse that didn’t even last two hours. So, what we work on now is to improve our response time, to bring it up each time.
“Transformers of 60-year-old, 50-year-old, lines that have been there since the 60s, and you’re expecting them to perform at the optimal rate 40 years after; it is not possible, which is why we need a lot of investments in this infrastructure to bring them up to speed, to bring them up to the state that is able to give us a grid that will not collapse again.
“So, we are also leveraging both public and private funds to de-risk project investment and attract more substantial financial commitments, enabling larger and faster project rollouts.”
He stressed that the country depends on a single national grid, mulling the expansion of regional and sub-national grid in a bid to improve the country’s power supply.
“We all rely on a single national grid today. If there is a disturbance of the national grid, it affects all the 36 states. Should it be like that? No, this will enable us to start moving gradually towards having a regional grid and possibly having state grids,” he said.
He revealed that the country has procured 1.3 million metres from the support of the World Bank programme, adding that the first delivery will commence in the next two months.
