Kebbi’s Tsamiya dry port to commence operations soon – Gov

The Tsamiya Dry Port in Kebbi State is set to begin operations, a move aimed at boosting regional trade and economic activities within the West African sub-region.

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State stated this after a meeting with President Patrick Talon of Benin Republic in Cotonou.

The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to actualise the port’s opening and facilitate trade along the Nigeria-Benin border.

The dry port is expected to enhance cargo movement, streamline customs procedures, and promote regional economic integration.

It is anticipated to increase bilateral trade volumes between Nigeria and the Benin Republic while attracting foreign investment in the logistics and manufacturing sectors.

Governor Idris said discussions during the meeting focused on strategic partnerships to ensure the successful commencement of operations at the Tsamiya Dry Port.

He noted that President Talon was accompanied by his foreign affairs and finance ministers, and both sides agreed on all necessary proposals for the project.

The agreement, signed earlier by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister and the Comptroller General of Customs alongside their Benin Republic counterparts, is expected to greatly benefit the residents along the Sagbana-Tsamiya route by improving trade and economic opportunities.

Depute Issa Saliu, a representative of Benin Republic’s government and a key facilitator of the project, expressed confidence that the dry port would start operating by the end of October.

He emphasised that the port would enhance trade not only between Nigeria and Benin but also with the Niger Republic, as Kebbi shares borders with both Francophone nations.

With the legalisation of trade on this route, local communities are expected to see improvements in their economic well-being through increased trade and other economic activities., he added.
