Reps to probe incessant building collapses

The House of Representatives has directed its Committees on Works, Housing, Safety Standards and the Committee on Environment to investigate the incessant building collapse in Nigeria and report in four (4) weeks.

This followed the adoption of a motion moved by Rep. Aderemi Oseni at the plenary on Wednesday.

Presenting the motion, the lawmaker noted that the recurring building collapse cases in major Nigerian cities have become a significant concern.

He lamented that, 154 people were trapped under debris in Saint Academy’s two-story building in Busa Buji community, Jos, Plateau State, with 22 deaths reported.

He cited a newspaper report on July 15, 2024, which reported that Nigeria experienced 135 building collapse incidents between 2022 and July 2024, which he said highlighted the need for urgent action.

Rep. Oseni said, “If nothing is done to urgently combat this emergency, more lives and properties will be lost and destroyed, leading to a devastating impact on communities and the economy”.

He noted that the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN) and other professional associations involved in building-related issues are tasked with enforcing regulations and controlling the engineering profession in order to prevent established industry best practices from being compromised.

The House adopted the motion and referred the motion to the relevant committees after an amendment to involve relevant professional regulatory agencies in the housing, engineering, environment and other sectors.
