Benue varsity pardons 103 students for exam malpractice

The Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi has granted pardon to 103 students who were found culpable of examination misconducts.

Daily Trust reports that the pardon was granted following the 315th (Special) meeting of the Senate which considered the report of the Examination Regulations and Irregularities Committee (ERIC) before extending the gesture.

The Senate had evoked sections 20 and 21 of the Benue State University Law 2020, which give it powers to manage and regulate examinations in the university to arrive at its decision to pardon the affected students.

A statement signed by Dr Bibiana Ayabam, of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, indicated that the pardon did not affect students with suspected cases of cultism, violence or physical assault, theft and rape.

The statement added, “It only applies to cases in the Second Semester, 2020/2021 and First Semester, 2022/2023 Academic Sessions.

“Specifically, the Senate resolved that the pardon extended to students under its prerogative is a one-off facility and, therefore, should not be cited as precedent, hence, future infraction(s) shall no longer be condoned but dealt with in line with the revised Examination Rules, Irregularities and Misconduct already in use by the University.”
