Hello Tractor, partners launch mechanization hub in Abuja to tackle Nigeria’s food security challenges

In a bold move to revolutionize Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, Hello Tractor, in partnership with Heifer International, has launched its second mechanization hub in Nigeria and fifth in Africa.

This cutting-edge facility, located in Gwako, Gwagwalada, Abuja, represents a significant milestone in the drive to close the mechanization gap and address the pressing challenge of food security across the continent.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Nneka Enwonwu, Country Managing Director of Hello Tractor Nigeria, emphasized the transformative role the new hub will play in empowering Nigerian farmers.

“The launch of this mechanization hub marks a transformative leap in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By enhancing service efficiency and fostering stronger collaboration across the ecosystem, we are not only accelerating economic growth but directly addressing one of the most urgent challenges of our time—food security,” Dr. Enwonwu remarked.

She continued: “This hub is more than just about mechanization; it is about equipping farmers with the critical tools and knowledge to drive productivity and build a resilient agricultural future. Through this initiative, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable, food-secure Nigeria that will benefit generations to come.”

As a comprehensive center for all key stakeholders—including tractor owners, mechanized service providers, operators, farmers, booking agents, and technicians—the hub will provide tractor maintenance and support services, logistics, access to agricultural inputs, and vital market linkages. This holistic approach will create an enabling environment for mechanization services to thrive and expand across the country.

Folu Okunade, Chief Operating Officer of Hello Tractor, underscored the critical need for mechanization in Nigeria, highlighting that the country requires more than 700,000 tractors to meet the demands of its cultivatable land.

“Mechanization is not just a solution—it’s a necessity. Many countries, including Nigeria, have an urgent need for mechanization, and the way to bridge that gap is through partnerships and innovative solutions like the one we’ve launched today,” Okunade stated.

He also emphasized that farmers do not need to own tractors to benefit from mechanization, as the hub will aggregate demand and provide access to these critical tools without the burden of ownership.

Dr. Lekan Tobe, Country Director for Heifer International Nigeria, stressed the importance of mechanization in boosting food security. “It’s not just about buying tractors; it’s about a full package that includes maintenance, deployment, and access to spare parts. Without this, tractors won’t last, and the impact on food security will be minimal,” Dr. Tobe explained.

He also noted that conservation agriculture training would be integrated to ensure sustainable farming practices.
