African countries converge in Abuja to tackle insecurity

Nigeria is set to host ministers of Defence from 28 African countries to strategise on ways to tackle the influx of fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) into the continent.

The minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali made this known at a press briefing to kick start the 7th meeting of the Ministers of Defence of the community of Sahel- Saharan States (CEN-SAD).

The minister said the conference would focus on defence and security issues in the African Region.

The theme of the conference; “Consolidating the Achievements of the Fight against Terrorism through Solidarity Development Actions, is slated for June 20-22, 2018 at the Nicon Hilton Abuja.

The ministers are expected to develop strategies to curb illegal movement of criminals across the regions and come up with lasting and holistic solution to security issues such as banditry, killer herdsmen, influx of small arms and crimes across border regions. 

The minister who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa said the Federal Government and other member states have taken cognizance of these security challenges and would make it one of the top agenda at the conference.
