2024 Africa conference on good governance: Leaders, citizens converge to drive systemic change

Amid ongoing political, economic, and social challenges across Africa, the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG) will host the Africa Conference 2024, titled “Good Governance in Africa: Leaders and Citizens Converge to Drive Systemic Change.”

The event, scheduled for October 3-4, 2024, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, aims to rethink governance and leadership across the continent.

Coinciding with SPPG’s fourth graduation ceremony, the conference will convene value-driven politicians, policymakers, and civil society leaders to address Africa’s pressing governance challenges.

In a press statement, the organisers said with crises such as food insecurity, climate-related disasters, regional conflicts, and the lingering impacts of COVID-19, the need for systemic change has never been more urgent.

According to the World Food Program, these crises are fuelling unrest, with protests erupting across Nigeria, South Africa, and Tunisia, and coups increasing in the Sahel since 2020.

“Africa Conference 2024 presents a unique platform for leaders who are committed to disruption — not for disruption’s sake, but for the transformation and betterment of our nations,” said Dr. Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili, Founder of SPPG and a leading advocate for transparent governance.

“At a time when our continent faces multiple crises, we need leaders who possess both the values and the courage to reimagine governance, prioritize citizens’ interests, and foster resilience.”

Civil society organizations have long advocated for more inclusive, citizen-centred governance across Africa. Dr. Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili, SPPG’s founder, stressed the importance of bold leadership, stating, “Africa Conference 2024 presents a unique platform for leaders committed to the transformation and betterment of our nations.”

The two-day event will feature expert panels, discussions, and breakout sessions, focusing on political leadership, institutional reforms, and citizen engagement. A Citizens’ Solidarity Walk will symbolize participants’ commitment to fostering solidarity across Africa, driving collective efforts towards building resilient and accountable governance systems.
