Senate passes S/West devt commission bill

The Senate has passed for third reading a bill seeking the establishment of the South West Development Commission.

The bill was passed during plenary on Thursday sequel to a report submitted to the committee of whole by the Chairman Senate Committee on Special Duties, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan.

The Senate had passed similar bills for the development of other geo-political zones including the North West which was recently assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Senator Kaka, in his presentation, recommended the passage of the bill for the socio-economic development of the South West, including addressing infrastructural deficits and tackling ecological problems in the region.

He said, “If the commission is established through presidential assent to the bill, it will like other development-driven commissions established on zonal basis receive funds from the federation account, donations from development partners etc.”

The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, commended the Senator Kaka-led committee for a “job well done.”

Senator Barau said, “The essence of the various development commissions being set up, is to fast track development of the entire country. President Bola Tinubu has assented to similar bills passed for zonal development-driven interventions and will surely assent to this one.”
