Unbeaten Remo Stars, Tornadoes win at Kano Pillars, Plateau United

Remo Stars and Niger Tornadoes have maintained their unbeaten run in the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season after recording away victories against Kano Pillars and Plateau United respectively in their week three matches played yesterday in Kano and Jos.

Last season’s runners-up, Remo Stars stunned Kano Pillars 2-0 at the Sani Abacha Stadium to maintain leadership of the league table.

Super Eagles fringe defender, Sodiq Ismail, put Remo Stars in front in the 26th minute with the hosts chasing an equaliser for the entire duration of the match.

However, Ghanaian import, Kwame Mawuena, ensured Remo Stars inflicted the first home defeat of the season on Pillars with the second goal in the 60th minute of the match that drew a capacity crowd at the famous Sani Abacha Stadium Kano.

With their perfect run so far, Remo Stars lead the NPFL table with the maximum points from three matches after victories over Abia Warriors and Sunshine Stars.

In Jos, last season’s strugglers, Niger Tornadoes, also recorded their second away win of the season after a shocking 2-1 victory against former champions, Plateau United.

Ifeanyi Okechukwu gave Tornadoes the lead in the 17th minute and Kufre Ebong added another in the fourth minute of second half added time but Sam Pam Jnr reduced the deficit a minute later.

Tornadoes started their campaign with a 2-1 win at Kwara United but were forced to a goalless draw by Nasarawa United in week 2.

Although they now boast seven points, the same as Rivers United, the ‘Ikon Allah’ boys of Minna are in third place due to inferior goal difference.

In other week three matches played yesterday, Heartland’s poor start to the season continued after they were forced to a goalless draw in Owerri by Katsina United.

Sunshine Stars also shared the spoils in a barren draw with visiting Abia Warriors who drew 1-1 with Akwa United in their week 2 fixture in Uyo.

With yesterday’s two away victories and the two earned by Rivers United and El-Kanemi Warriors against Lobi Stars and Nasarawa United on Saturday in Lafia, the NPFL week three has now produced four away victories.
