15,000 Jigawa flood victims take refuge in schools

At least 15,000 people displaced by the recent flooding in Jigawa State have taken shelter in 45 primary and secondary schools converted into Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

Dr Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), said that, “The major challenge is relocating these IDPs to safer areas as their current locations are prone to future flooding.

“We appreciate the support from organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO) which provided medicines.”

While disclosing that the state government bought food items worth N2bn to be distributed to the IDPs, he said the government had been working to mitigate the impact of the floods which affected many LGAs.
