Troops arrest gunrunners in Plateau

Troops of Operation SAFE HAVEN, maintaining peace in Plateau and some parts of Bauchi and Kaduna states, have arrested some suspected gunrunners in Naraguta mining area of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Parading the suspects on Wednesday, at the headquarters of the operation in Jos, the spokesperson of the operation, Major Stephen Zhakom, said the troops also recovered arms and ammunition during the operation.

Narrating how the suspects were arrested, the Major Zhakom said, “In pursuance of one of its core mandates of mopping up illegal arms and ammunition in the Joint Operations Area, troops of the operation arrested 5 notorious gunrunners and recovered arms and ammunition in an intelligence-driven operation carried out in Plateau State.

“In an operation that lasted from midnight of Sep 16 to the early hours of Sep 17, Operation SAFE HAVEN DELTA FORCE and Sector 1 troops raided the hideout of a gunrunner identified as Mohammed Sani at Naraguta Mining Area in Bayameni along Bauchi Road in Jos North LGA of Plateau State.

“During the operation, troops arrested the suspected gunrunner and 4 others as well as recovered weapons and ammunition of different calibres including two AK-47 rifles, One Fabrique Nationale automatic rifle, fourteen AK-47 magazines, One Fabrique Nationale magazine, 5,316 rounds of 7.62 MM (Special), ninety-eight rounds of 7.62 MM (NATO) and 43 rounds of 9 MM,” the spokesman said.

Major Zhakom further stated that the suspects were being interrogated to facilitate the arrest of other syndicate members

The operation however commended the people of the state for furnishing troops with credible information leading to the arrest of the gunrunners and recovery of arms and ammunition and urged the populace to continue cooperating with security agencies in ensuring a crime-free environment.
