The Nigerian Democracy Working Group, a civil society organization, has called on Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi, Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), to ensure that the upcoming local government elections in Kano are conducted with the highest standards of credibility.
The group also emphasised that the elections should set a benchmark for other states to follow.
In a statement by co-conveners Dr Vincent Okpara Innocent and Dr Idris Aliyu Mohammed, the organisation expressed confidence in Prof. Malumfashi’s ability to oversee a fair election, citing his past performance as a key factor.
“We have closely monitored the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission’s commitment under Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi to conduct inclusive and transparent local government elections in Kano State.

“We commend the chairman and his team for their adherence to a court order in Abuja, which mandated a reduction in the cost of election nomination forms. This action reflects the commission’s deep respect for the rule of law.
“The commission’s proactive engagement with opposition parties and its efforts to promote best practices in ensuring inclusivity and a democratic environment is highly commendable,” the CSO said.
They said as advocates for democratic excellence, they are confident in the Commission’s genuine commitment to involving all parties and stakeholders in the electoral process.
The commission has slated October 26, 2024, for the conduct of the chairmanship and councillorship elections in the state.
