Adamawa CJ releases 26 inmates

The Chief Judge (CJ) of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, has released 26 inmates and granted bail to 13 others as part of the state’s ongoing jail delivery exercise.

During the exercise, 128 cases of convicted inmates were reviewed, with 10 inmates released and nine receiving reduced sentences. Six were convicted, while 16 awaiting trial inmates were freed.

Some of the released inmates will perform community service as part of non-custodial sentences.

Justice Abdulrahaman, head of the Jail Delivery Committee, said their cases, mostly civil, were deemed less serious, prompting the committee to exercise its prerogative of mercy.

She encouraged the released inmates to demonstrate good behaviour having been given a second chance.

The Yola Correctional Centre, which has a capacity of 500, currently houses 440 inmates, including 24 on death row and five serving life sentences.
