UniJos VC seeks alumni support as electricity bill hits N80m monthly

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Plateau State, Professor Ishaya Tanko, has expressed concern over the sharp rise in the institution’s electricity bill, which has surged from N20 million to N80 million per month.

This increase is attributed to higher electricity tariffs for Band A users set by distribution companies.

Speaking during a gathering of the University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA) Lagos Chapter, Professor Tanko appealed to the alumni to support the university’s shift towards solar energy as a more sustainable option for powering the institution.

He emphasised the strong relationship between the university and its alumni, describing it as a collaborative effort to uplift the institution’s image.

Earlier, the Chairman of UJAA’s Lagos Chapter, Dr. Victor Ogwezzy, commended the event as a successful reunion and acknowledged the efforts of three alumni who were recognised for their longstanding support.

Honorees included Mr Adewale Raji, former Group Managing Director and CEO of Odu’a Investment Co. Ltd; Mr Babatunde Ogala SAN, OFR, Principal Partner at Babatunde Ogala & Co; and Dr Agada Apochi, Group Managing Director and CEO of Unified Payments, who were all celebrated at the 2024 reception and dinner of the association.

UJAA’s National President, Sani Nuhu, congratulated the Lagos chapter for organising the event and commended the awardees.

He urged members to continue supporting the university, stressing the need for the institution to meet global standards in education.
