Prospective Corps members stranded at Kano orientation camp

Some prospective corps members mobilised for the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are currently stranded at Kusalla, Kano NYSC orientation camp in Karaye local government area of the State.

A prospective corps member currently inside the orientation camp who spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity said they were refused entry on the basis of late arrival.

He said most of the affected members were those from far eastern and Southern states of the country who probably encountered travel challenges.

“It’s really sad that we will undergo a rigorous process to come down here and be refused entry. Some of us got their call up letters very late and traveled two or three days on the road to come down here.

“We are now stranded, about 100 of us are here now not knowing our fate.”

Another Corp member said, “I came to camp on Thursday, that’s the second day of resumption. Our vehicle got faulty along the way so I did not arrive at Kano until around 1am. I had to spend the day in Kano.

“The following day when I was about to leave a moving vehicle smashed my phone and it got damaged. All my documents are not printed on were inside the phone so I have to get it fixed also which took me another day.

“I arrived at camp that day around 11pm when everyone had gone to bed nobody to attend to us unlike in other camps as we heard from other colleagues where they used to spend the night registering people.

“Now, yesterday they told us that the porta .has been closed from Abuja. Some of us have no even money to eat now. Some females are crying. We really need help.”

They are, however, calling on the authorities concerned to come to their aid as they are now in a state of confusion.

Efforts to speak with the NYSC through its Public Relations Officer in Kano, Juliana Nahemiah, was not successful as she rejected calls and did not respond to a text message sent to her.
