Traders clash over garri price in Kwara

Garri sellers in the Mandate Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, have reportedly clashed over the price of the commodity.

City & Crime gathered that a commotion erupted when a garri seller, described as an outsider, entered the market and began selling her garri at N800 per bowl.

Checks by City & Crime showed that the price of the commodity ranged from N900 to N1,000 per bowl at the market.

The development reportedly led to a confrontation, with several traders opposing the woman for her action.

The disagreement escalated into a commotion, drawing the attention of the market’s authorities and bystanders.

The Babaloja of Mandate Market, Alhaji Muritala Tambaraku, on Thursday, condemned the development, saying such altercation was unwelcome in the market.

He said, “Upon hearing about the incident, I rushed to the scene. However, by the time I arrived, the troublemakers had fled.”

He added that after he intervened, he supervised the sales of the N800 per mudu garri, ensuring that the woman continued her business without further harassment.

He assured that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence and to maintain a fair and peaceful trading environment in the market.

He further said, “In fact, we, the chairmen and chairwomen of the market, often go round to regulate food prices and bring ease to the community.”
