Kano govt initiates drafting of climate change policy

The Kano State Watershed Erosion and Climate Change Development Agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, has commenced drafting a comprehensive climate change policy document for the state.

This initiative coincides with the government’s reconvening for the second stakeholders and technical validation session focusing on the six thematic areas outlined in the draft Kano climate change policy.

Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil, the Executive Secretary, highlighted the policy’s objective to identify and combat climate change while mitigating its environmental impacts. He underscored the collaborative effort involving stakeholders such as academics, civil society, policymakers, and the House of Assembly, both locally and nationally.

“We initially drafted six thematic areas for the policy, but based on stakeholder feedback, we have expanded to eight, incorporating new focuses like afforestation, land use management, health, water resources, and education, among others,” Dr. Khalil stated.

The primary goal of the policy, he emphasised, is to reduce the effects of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Following the validation workshop, the final draft will be presented to the House of Assembly for approval before implementation. Stakeholders will also be engaged to design an action plan for effective policy implementation.

Stakeholders present at the validation meeting expressed satisfaction and optimism, viewing the initiative as a crucial step towards safeguarding the environment and shaping a sustainable future.
