NUJ decries assault on journalists in Niger

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, has decried assault on journalists in the state.

The union said it would not accept any form of threat to the lives and property of journalists in the state.

The Secretary of the council, Usman Chiji, in a statement, reacted to a viral video posted by one Nura Yerima, suspected to have been sponsored by politicians who threatened to deal with a reporter with Prestige FM Minna, Nurudeen Ishaku Daza, over a report on the plight of pensioners in the state.

The council described the threat as unacceptable, worrisome and an attempt to stop journalists from holding government officials to account.

The statement reads in part: “The union views the video in its entirety as abusive, defamatory, derogatory and very disturbing considering the rate of hooliganism and pockets of other forms of violence that are peculiar to Minna metropolis.”
