Ex-NSCDC officer sentenced to life in prison for raping minor

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced 39-year-old Olukayode Dayo, a former officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to life in prison for raping a minor.

Dayo was arraigned before Justice Lekan Olatawura on May 13, 2022, on a one-count charge of raping a 13-year-old girl on December 25, 2021.

Then prosecutor, Julius Ajibare, told the court that in the victim’s statement to the police, she said, “I was living with my grandmother and was sent home to bring banana and kola nuts. On my way, a man named Olukayode (defendant) intercepted me with his motorcycle. He placed the banana and kola nut on my head and took me to an unfinished building. Despite my shouting, he ignored me, removed my under wares and raped me.”

The defendant, represented by his counsel, Oluwaseun Oyebanji, denied the charge and pleaded leniency from the court but did not call any witness.

In his judgment, Justice Lekan Olatawura stated that the victim consistently and unequivocally identified the defendant who was well-known to her as the perpetrator.

He held that, “In all, I find proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant raped the 13-year-old girl on December 25, 2021, and consequently, I find him guilty as charged. Consequently, the defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment.”
