Group alleges invasion of Benue community

A youth group, Otukpo Youth Patriots Forum (OYPF), has raised alarm over an alleged invasion of Efeyi-Ipole community in Ugboju District in Otukpo LGA of Benue State by armed persons.

The group, in a statement made available to our correspondent at the weekend, alleged that the suspected individuals were from neighbouring Ohimini LGA and accused the Otukpo Area Police Commander, David Ogenyi, of involvement.

They, therefore, urged the Benue State Commissioner of Police (CP), Hassan Steve Yabanet, to investigate the matter.

OYPF’s President, Ejelikwu Adakole, and Secretary, James Iduh, claimed that over 20 armed youths, allegedly backed by Mr Ogenyi invaded Efeyi-Ipole at 1 am on Friday, June 21, adding that their objective was to capture suspects linked to the recent murder of Chief Sunday Okpe in Amla-Icho in Otukpo LGA.

They said that Efeyi-Ipole youths arrested 18 of the invaders, who confessed they were sent by Mr Ogenyi, noting further that the 18 were handed over to the DPO of Ogoli-Ugboju.

The OYPF noted that the situation could have escalated into violence if not for the caution exercised by Efeyi-Ipole elders and youths.

Reacting, Mr Ogenyi dismissed the allegation as unfounded and conspiratorial, asserting he would not use civilians for any police operation.

He condemned the claim as a campaign of calumny and vowed to maintain his professional integrity.
