Osayi-Samuel inaugural football tourney attracts 64 teams

The ancient city of Benin City is set to witness how 64 youth teams will trade tackles at the maiden edition of the Bright Osayi -Samuel U-13 football tournament.

The tournament organised by the Edo State Football Association will run from July 30th  to the end of August in Benin City, with the teams picked across the three senatorial districts of Edo state.

The Edo State FA chair, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse in a statement said “As you can see, We are set for the maiden edition of Bright  Osayi-Samuel football tournament for under 13 boys in the state.

“But we shall begin with the Press briefing, presentation of the trophy, and other items, then a media parley with the organisers ( Edo FA) and the cup donor/sponsor, here at the media centre of the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin City.

“Stakeholders of the game and sports journalists from across Nigeria will be here for the event, the organisers and the participating teams can’t wait for the tournament to begin.”

The Super Eagles and Fenerbahce of Turkey star Samuel Osayi was in Benin City recently with his parents and met with Edo state Governor Godwin Obaseki and a former President, Goodluck Jonathan.

It was during the visit that he promised to sponsor the youth football tournament.

He stated that he is giving back to society through the competition, which will be held annually, and that the tournament’s goal is to catch them young, nurture and prepare them for future challenges.
