Lagos battling 2.3m housing gap – Commissioner

The Commissioner for Housing in Lagos State, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, says the state is currently battling a housing gap of 2.3 million.

Akinderu-Fatai, who was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Abdulhafiz Toriola, an engineer, said this at the Stanbic IBTC Home Ownership Summit, with the theme, “Building Wealth through Home Ownership.”

“In Lagos, the demand for housing is ever-increasing, and the importance of facilitating home ownership cannot be overemphasized, considering the 2.3 million housing gap that requires strategic attention from governments across board and stakeholders across the value chain,” the commissioner said.

He said there was an increasing demand for houses, just as the government has provided over 10,000 flats across the 39 state-owned estates.

The commissioner said, “In bridging this gap, the state government, via direct intervention, has delivered 39 estates across the state, amounting to 10,060 flats, with ongoing projects adding approximately 1,938 more flats.”

The chief executive officer of Stanbic IBTC Bank, Wole Adeniyi, said, “As access to affordable housing remains a pressing issue, our home loan solution offers hope.”
