Odutola said the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) had begun investigation into the incident.

Similarly, the Edo State police command arrested over 45 suspects over an alleged involvement in various crimes.

Parading the suspects, the commissioner of police in the state, Funsho Adeboye, said they were arrested over alleged kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms, among others offences.

He described the rate of cult-related killings in the state as worrisome, saying the police would not fold its hands and allow criminals hold the state to ransom. He said the command had the backing of the state government in its drive to rid the state of criminals.

On the killing of a female final year student of the University of Benin, he said the police were on the trail of the perpetrators, promising that they would soon be arrested.

Adeboye said “gangsters associated with cultism or whatever name they give it are criminals who have been causing a lot of restiveness in the state.”

He appealed to all stakeholders to continue to give useful information to enable the police fight crime and criminality in the state.
