Kogi, NDLEA, others move to tackle drug abuse

The Kogi State Government is collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforce Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders to tackle drug abuse and trafficking in the state.

The state’s NDLEA Chairman, Umar Mustapha Yahuza, at stakeholders’ meeting in Okene as part of activities lined up to mark this year’s World Drug Day on June 26, noted that the rising incidents of drug abuse had become dangerous.

He added that the menace should be curtailed as it had been established to have destroyed many homes with consequences in the rising wave of incidents of kidnapping, robbery and rape.

He said, “Fighting drug abuse is a way of giving a better life to citizens. Drug abuse removes conscience as the abuser remains under false moral behaviour to do many unlawful things.

“The problem of drug abuse is clear to everybody. It has crashed many marriages and ruined families, particularly youths, with incidents of inconclusiveness in their lives, leading them to become a nuisance to society.”

He assured that the agency would continue to arrest and prosecute illicit drug dealers and abusers in its attempt to stem the menace.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Drug Abuse, Eunice Achimugwu, counselled parents to be vigilant on the moral behaviour of their wards and caution them against drug abuse.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development, Monday Anyebe, said the present administration would join forces with relevant agencies to tackle the issue of drug abuse and trafficking.
